How can nuclear energy be used?

There are many uses of nuclear energy. They include electric power, nuclear weapons, and the treatment of health problems.  Nuclear power plants make large amounts of electricity, but this creates nuclear radiation, which is harmful.

1. Radiation Oncologists can treat medical patients to help stop harmful diseases, like cancer. The nuclear radiation given off from a machine is sent into the patient's body, and the radiation can be located with an x-ray. They are attracted to the cancer cells, and when they reach the cells, the doctors use the x-rays to find the radiation. They can remove the cells through surgery now, because they know were the cells are.

2. When used properly, one uranium pellet and a nuclear reactor can make more energy than if you burn fossil fuels, like coalWhen a chain reaction occurs, the energy is turned into heat. Water is placed on top of the nucleus, and it turns into steam. the steam spins a turbine, and the spinning is made into electricity.

3. When the nucleus of an atom is split, a massive amount of energy is released. When put in a bomb, it can cause catastrophic damage to the environment it is released in.
